Specific Scoliosis Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation
Traditionally, the medical opinion is that "ëxercise and physical therapy does not work for scoliosis". This may be true for general physiotherapy, general exercise programs and general core stability programs. However, there is growing research evidence in the effectiveness of specific scoliosis rehabilitation and exercise programs, such as Scroth method, CLEAR, CBP and SEAS rehabilitation.
In cases of small curves less than 20 degrees or if an adult curve is stable, this may be the best initial course of treatment. In cases where the scoliosis is progressing and the curve is greater than 20 degrees, rehabilitation alone may not be strong enough and it is best to use it in combination with bracing treatments.
SEAS
SEAS stands for the Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis. It originated in Italy and has been in use for over 20 years internationally. At Spinecare, we use the SEAS program because it is the most evidence based physical therapy and rehabilitation approach to treating scoliosis. It involves assessing the patient for weaknesses in muscle balance, strength, flexibility and neurological control. The patient is then thought how to do an Active Self Correction procedure specific to the patient's scoliosis curve. Multiple research papers have been published which shows the effectiveness of the SEAS protocol.
